Introduction
The Sony Xperia Z2 comes as an interesting proposition. A sequel to 2013’s Xperia Z1 Smartphone- the Z2 too is a waterproof Android Smartphone that comes laden with tons of amazing features and added applications. Launched for Rs. 49990 in India, Sony Xperia Z2 Smartphone comes packed with an advanced hardware configuration and has borrowed waterproof and rugged capabilities from Z1. Further, it runs on the Google’s latest Android version.
Moreover, Z2 has been launched amidst the wave of other premium smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. Now, the big question is if this latest launch from Sony will be able to fight back against such lofty rivals?
Design and Specifications
Xperia Z2 Smartphone features the distinctive Sony look-and-feel, which we have already seen in Z1. It comes in a blocky chassis design and includes squared-off corners, with a glass back. Moreover, the sides are covered with premium finished silver bezel that also accommodates connectors and buttons.
Sony's trademark circular power on/off button can be seen on the right edge; beneath there is a volume control switch and at the bottom a camera shutter button and above the power button you can see a mciroSD card slot covered with a plastic flap- all at the right spine. Audio jack can be found at the top edge, while the left spine houses a covered bay that has a SIM slot and microUSB port. Moreover, there is a Sony's magnetic dock connector too at the left side.
The front throws off a large 5.2 inch Touch Screen with sensor and front snapper placed above the display, while the 3 capacitive touch keys can be found below the display. Sony Xperia Z2 is an IP58 certified device, which means just like its predecessor it can be submerged into 1.5m of fresh water for maximum time of 30 minutes. Moreover, the handset is dust protected.
Sony has included its Xperia Z2 with a powerful 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 Processor. This makes Z2 listed amongst the fastest next-gen top-of-the-range for handsets, Galaxy S5 has been provided with slightly a faster 2.5GHz version with the same chipset. Further, Sony has included 3GB RAM and Adreno 330 GPU, making multitasking and gaming much responsive and lag free.
Its Rear Camera has a resolution of 20.7 Mega Pixels and supports 4K video capture. The camera comes with multitude of settings, modes, tweaks and filters. Moreover, the 2.2MP front snapper is capable of capturing decent shots. The Z2 comes with more advanced and revamped TimeShift Camera app, which is capable of capturing high speed clips at 120FPS. Users can select and slow down one or multiple sections of the recorded TimeShift video. Other camera features include Creative effect, AR effect, Vine, Info-eye, Social live, Sweep Panorama and Background Defocus.
Then there is 16GB of internal storage added in Xperia Z2 with support for microSD card up to 128GB. It uses 3200mAh battery to power up, which is claimed to last for 15 hours. Further, the handset runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS and comes included with Sony’s own skin. It has tons of applications that pre-installed, of which most are the part of Sony’s ecosystem. There is Walkman app sitting beside Android's own Music app, PlayStation, PlayStation Mobile, Video Unlimited, Xperia Lounge and Sony Select. Interestingly, a new app called as What’s New has been added in Z2. This app brings together different Sony media in a single place.
Final Verdict
The Sony Xperia Z2 with no doubt looks like a clear improvement over 2013’s Xperia Z1. It comes with a sharp and crisp Full HD Display, advanced processor, latest Android version and a whopping 20.7MP Rear Camera that includes G Lens and the intelligent BION for mobile image-processing engine; and of course some appealing camera features. And what’s more interesting is that Z2 will be bundled with Sony’s Smart Band Wearable as a promotional offer (though for the first month only). As of now, this is all we have here to share with you. Once we receive the unit, a detailed Sony Xperia Z2 Review will be published on our website.
